The Olde Towne Market

The Olde Towne Market started in response to the steady decline that had begun to happen in St. George's. Many of the established businesses had closed in 2008 and 2009 and buildings had begun to look neglected. The idea of a market was presented at a town hall meeting by Michelle Wales as a way to generate new interest in the town and bring locals back into the town to support it. The original dea was that it should be a European street style market with everything from food items to arts & crafts being sold. Cheryl Hayward Chew embraced the idea and the market was launced with the help of a band of volunteers in October 2010. Support was given to the martket from its inception by the BEDC.

WHERE ARE OUR VENDORS NOW???

The BEDC was interested in supporting the market as a vehicle for would-be entrepreneurs to try their hand at vending without having to invest in a bricks & mortar setup.

It is a testament to the success of the market that many vendors who have "passed through" now either have bricks & mortar establishments or more permanent locations.

Here are just a few of our success stories, these include:

Rachel Perry - who now has Baubelles, located next door to the Carriage House/Tempest.

Kelli Thompson - who now has Saltwater Jewelry located on Water Street.

Sonia Williams -  who now runs a health food store, Twisted Sistah's, located on Ord Road, Paget.

Dennon Bean - who now has a permanent spot for his business Dandy Donuts located on Front Street, Hamilton.

WHO DO WE WANT?

We are looking for FARMERS & FISHERMEN who are able to attend the market for free, if they are licensed and registered with the relevant bodies.

We are looking for ARTISTS & CRAFTS FOLK - it is often more difficult to sell artwork and crafts and therefore we are very happy if two or more artists/crafters get together and share their spot.

We are looking for BUSKERS & STREET PERFORMERS. We cannot pay you but we are happy for you to busk or perform. Please let us know ahead of time that you will be joining us. By arrangement we can provide power, but this needs to be sorted out ahead of the market day.

We are also looking for all the "usual" market vendors selling clothes, shoes, wares, household stuff and more.

To join the Olde Town Market, please go to the VENDOR APPLICATIONS tab and complete the very simple online form EACH MONTH.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The market changes each time we run it, we do have "diehard vendors" who come back for every market session, but we also attract vendors who want to sell when we have a specific theme or event. We encourage everyone to come out each time, because it is never the same!

VENDORS - THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The fee is $35.00

  • Please arrive well before 1pm as the road gets chained off at 1pm.

  • Please RESPECT the directions given by Regis our Corporation of St. George's worker and any members of the Olde Towne Committee.

  • PLEASE NOTE that there are no fixed spots, whilst we try to keep things the same for vendors each time, there will be times that you will be asked to move. Please comply.

  • There is NO ELECTRICTY on the day. If you are likely to need power, we have to liase with businesses to see whether they will graciously provide power.

  • Please bring a table/chair & tent.
